Performance evaluations now open with new Leadership Competency Framework

Professional-staff members are encouraged to attend one of the two upcoming workshops or use job aids to prepare.

This year’s performance evaluations will look a little different for Metropolitan State University of Denver deans and professional–staff members. Based on feedback from last year’s pilot program, the University has implemented the new Leadership Competency Framework in addition to the standard SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound) goals.

Charles Kibort

“Incorporating the Leadership Competency Framework into performance evaluations enhances the process because it allows us to look at the full picture, both what and how,” said Charles Kibort, director of Human Resources Operations and Strategy. “Goals are about what the employee accomplishes, and the Leadership Competency Framework is about how they accomplish it.”

Deans and professional-staff members will receive an email Wednesday from HR announcing the opening of evaluations. Employees should plan to dedicate around 30 minutes each for self-assessment, performance discussion and the written evaluation. Evaluations are due by June 30.

“Good performance reviews allow managers to deliver fair and actionable assessments to their direct reports,” Kibort said. “This can increase employee engagement, provide strong recognition and encouragement and create tangible paths for employee growth rooted in accountability.”

Resources and job aids

To help employees understand the new framework, the HR Office has created resources and job aids and is hosting workshops in May and June.
